“QUENCH not the Spirit.” 1 Thessalonians 5:19

The word quench means to put out or extinguish the light or fire of a thing. It means to lose heat, potency or power; much the same way you douse a fire.

The above scripture is the reason why many have the life of God and the Spirit of God but remain ordinary.

So many have the Spirit of God that created the world, but there is no evidence of His presence in their lives. They are as normal or worse off than the next man.

You’ve got to excite the Spirit of God in you. How? Look at the MSG rendering

Don’t suppress the Spirit…

The AMP says

Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the Holy Spirit.

To subdue is to bring under subjection, to exert control especially by an exertion of will.

Think about this. How many times have you heard the gentle leading of the Spirit of God, but subdued Him and exerted your will? How many times has He prompted you to pray for a brother or sister, but you subdued His Spirit because you needed your rest? How many times has the Holy Ghost prompted you to give to someone or invest some time with Him, but you subdued Him because you had a deadline at your place of work?

The Spirit of God is a person with real emotions, and for every time you refuse Him, you reduce or put out His fire.

Galatians 5:17 says

For the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other…

The Spirit of God and your personal mental ability will never be in agreement.

Several years ago I learned that I can tell what the Spirit of God needs from me by identifying what my flesh wants.

The will of God would always go in the other direction.

I do not suppress or douse the fire of the Spirit in my life. I am fervent in Spirit.
