Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs. Matthew 15:25-26

What a response that was! I remember the first time I read this scripture; I couldn’t quite believe it. This is Jesus; our Lord and Saviour, giving one of the best ‘savage’ responses (as we would call it) I have ever seen.

But what struck me most about this scripture is the reply the Syrophoenician woman gave;

And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

What a great comeback that was! She took no offence at the implication of being called a dog. Rather, she with quick wit took Christ’s every word and deftly turned it to her own advantage. She recognized that with just the crumbs, her daughter could get her healing.

There are so many lessons to learn from this scripture; humility, patience, consistency, and most importantly, faith. You see, the crumbs as used in the text above can be likened to the seed of God’s Word. When you receive a seed, there are three things you can do with it; discard it, eat it, or plant it; thereby producing more of its kind. If God is to bless you, all He’ll use is the seed; that is, the Word.

All God would do for you are embedded in the Word of God. The inception of your victory is dependent on how well you use the seed that you have received. Even your salvation process came by the Word.

It is, therefore, your responsibility to ensure that the seed grows in your hands. Taking a look at the story of Jesus and Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:22-32), you’ll see that once the Word of God comes to you, it delivers to your Spirit the energy to go. But just like Peter, that energy cannot sustain you through.

Matthew 14:29 says,

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

The proceeding verse says,

But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

Do you see that? The words of the Word delivered energy to Peter that made Him walk on water initially; but that energy couldn’t sustain him through, as he failed to give attention to it. The energy of God’s Word in you must counterbalance the energy of the world around you. Receiving the seed isn’t enough; you have to grow it. Learn to declare in faith; it is your victory!

I am not an unwise Christian. I grow the seed of the Word in me; I do not eat it, or discard it. I am energized by the Word!
