The Lagos State Police Command on Monday took Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, and her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello popularly known as JJC Skillz, to court for defying the lockdown order in Lagos State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, confirmed this on Monday, he said that the actress, popularly called ‘Jenifa’, had been taken to a Chief Magistrates Court in Ogba, Lagos.
They were arraigned for breaching the Lagos Infection Diseases Regulations 2020 (the Regulations) which prescribes a jail term of one month or N100,000 fine or both for persons found guilty of hosting gatherings or defying the lockdown order.
The celebrity couple pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of hosting a gathering of 20 persons and over, contrary to the social distancing directives of the Lagos State Government.
The charge against them is made pursuant to Regulation 8(1a &b) and S 17(1) of the State’s Infectious Disease Regulation 2020.
According to the regulation, anyone found guilty is liable to one-month imprisonment or N100,000.
At the time of filing this report, the Attorney-General of Lagos, Moyo Onigbanjo SAN was leading the Prosecution for the State.
However, journalists were not allowed into the courtroom ‘because the police authorities cited the need to maintain social distancing.
An excerpt from a press statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana reads, below:
The Court found them guilty as charged and sentenced as follows: The defendants are to pay a fine of 100,000 each, sentenced to 14 days community service, three hours per day, excluding Saturday and Sunday; each Defender shall visit 10 important public places within Lagos Stanoncompliancethe public on the consequences, and noncompliance with the restriction order; and they must submit the names and phone numbers of every person who attended the party.
They shall be placed on isolation by the State Government to determine their COVID-19 status. Failure to abide by the above directives shall attract more severe punishments.
