Last December in Saudi Arabia, Andy Ruiz lost the WBO, IBF, IBO, WBA heavyweight world titles when he dropped a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision to Anthony Joshua.
The fight was a rematch of their June 2019 encounter, which saw Ruiz pulled off a massive upset by dropping four knockdowns before stopping Joshua in seven rounds.
Ruiz entered the rematch in poor shape. He gained weight, he was slow and unable to get off with his punches.
After that defeat, Ruiz parted ways with trainer Manny Robles.
He also admitted to partying for two months straight after beating Joshua for the titles, which led to him entering training camp late and not preparing properly.
“I feel that I disappointed my people and I have to bring them back,” Ruiz said to ES News. “I will surprise the world again by being fit and having all the skills to do it again.”
Ruiz has now hooked up with trainer Eddy Reynoso, who is best known for his work with Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. He also trains Ryan Garcia, Julio Cesar Martinez, Frank Sanchez, Luis Nery and others.
The Mexican heavyweight has already begun training, hoping to fight in September.
He was called out by Dillian Whyte, but that fight won’t happen next.
“I would fight Dillian Whyte and I would like to shut him up, fight the third fight against Anthony Joshua, then go against Wilder or Fury.
“It would be an incredible fight [with Whyte]. I know I can win. I feel like I can win against everyone, but it’s up to me [to do it].”
