Mike Tyson-Roy Jones exhibition bout reportedly postponed

There are reports that the heavily publicised exhibition match with former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. and undisputed champion Mike Tyson has been postponed to late November.

According to BoxingScene, two sources with knowledge of the situation have confirmed the report, adding that internal conference calls are scheduled for Monday to further discuss the event, including the possibility of moving the event off of its original September 12 date.

News of the potential postponement was first reported by Ring TV.

The event will be distributed live on Pay-Per-View, a music and social media app which also comes complete with a 10-part docu-series leading up to the event.

There now appears to be plenty of time to build up to that moment.

Sources closest to the heart of the promotion declined to comment on the development or whether the reported 11-week delay is accurate.

According to the Ring TV report, the reason for the postponement was due to the belief that a later date could help generate more revenue for the event which has caught massive mainstream attention, even if in a circus-like fashion.

The show will also include a six-round cruiserweight bout between YouTube star and unbeaten boxing rookie Jake Paul (1-0, 1KO) and former NBA star Nate Robinson, the first-ever three-time Slam Dunk champion who will be making his pro debut.

Sources from both camps told BoxingScene that Paul and Robinson remain in training, though awaiting further instructions in the light of the recent rumours.

The evening’s main event will strictly remain as an exhibition match, a point emphasized by Andy Foster, executive director of the California State Athletic Commission.

Jones, 51, has served largely as a trainer and promoter since calling it quits in the ring 2018.

The former middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight titlist wrapped up his incredible career with a February 2018 points win over Scott Sigmon at Pensacola (Florida) Civic Center in his hometown where he turned pro nearly 29 years prior—one year after being robbed of the Gold medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Tyson, 54, has not fought since suffering a knockout loss to Kevin McBride in June 2005.

The loss was his second straight and third within the final four fights of his otherwise historic career, which included his serving as the lineal heavyweight champion in the late 1980s and enjoying a brief title run in his mid-1990s comeback.

The global superstar has worn many hats while in retirement, having appeared in movies, TV shows, serving as a promoter for a spell and also starring in a celebrated one-man Broadway show based on his incredible life. Next up for the former baddest man on the planet is an appearance on Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” series, with “Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef” premiering Sunday evening at 9:00pm ET/PT.
