‘God willing I’ll get my hands on Tyson Fury and his WBC belt – Joshua

Share this story:

IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is crossing his fingers that a full division unification takes place in 2021.

A showdown with WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is targeted for 2021 – with both boxers already agreeing on a 50-50 split for the first bout, with a rematch clause that each boxer can exercise.

Before that can happen, Joshua has to overcome a mandatory defence against Kubrat Pulev.

The fight with Pulev was scheduled for June 20, and it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A new date is being worked out for the month of December. Right now the exact venue is being worked out – and the possibility of having a small crowd at the event.

“There’s a potential date coming up, I’m looking to be out in December,” Joshua told Sky Sports. “I like to compete against the best.

“Pulev is a world title challenger as well. I’ve beaten five champions now and Pulev is another tough challenge, which leads me on to another challenge, which is a champion.

“God willing I get my hands on that Tyson Fury, [and his] WBC belt, so I’m just loving it, I can’t wait. This is what I live for, this is my passion. I feel like this is my calling.”

Fury has a contracted obligation of his own.

A tentative date is set down for December 19th, with Fury defending his title against Deontay Wilder in a trilogy fight. They fought back in February, with Fury dominating the action and stopping Wilder in the seventh round. There was an immediate rematch clause, which Wilder exercised.

Should Joshua and Fury both win their respective bouts, their promoters would like to match them in the first half of the year.
