Frank Warren, co-promoter for WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, says a deal is very close for summer unification with IBF, WBA, WBO, IBO champion Anthony Joshua.
Warren calmed down the critics who became frantic after a recent interview where Fury claimed an agreement was nowhere near done.
The two sides are shooting for the first of a two-fight series to take place on a date in June.
“The fight is very close to being done now. It’s all COVID-19 related but I think it will go on some time in June, latest July.
“It’s going to be a two-fight deal, and it depends what happens in the first fight and agreement of all parties as to where and what happens after that,” Warren told Nick Parkinson.
The location is unknown, but both sides agree that it’s very likely to be staged outside of the UK.
Several locations are angling to secure the big event.
“There are a number of territories that want to put it on but COVID is in their areas now,” Warren added.
“But I still don’t think it will happen in the UK, it will go where the most money will be made.
“It’s a big fight and they need to make the most money from it because the loser could be finished.”
Joshua (24-1, 22 KOs), 31, was in the ring back in December, when he battered and stopped mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev.
Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs), 32, has been away from the ring for over a year. The last time he saw action was in February of 2020. He broke down and stopped Deontay Wilder to capture the WBC title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
