President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step in reorganizing the Buhari government’s administrative structure by indefinitely suspending the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdul-Rasheed Bawa.

The suspension follows serious allegations of abuse of office, prompting the need for a thorough investigation into his conduct.

Bawa has been directed to hand over his responsibilities to the Director of Operations during the investigation.

The decision to suspend Bawa is part of a series of anticipated changes within the government’s administrative circle, particularly among those in appointment positions.

Last week, President Tinubu also suspended Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as investigations and financial sector reforms are underway.

Emefiele’s suspension stemmed from an ongoing investigation and the planned reforms in the financial sector.

He has been directed to hand over his duties to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) during the investigation and reforms.

These recent developments have caused speculation and concerns among public officials with appointment portfolios, especially those appointed during the previous administration of President Buhari.

Rumors have circulated regarding the potential suspension of Mallam Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, although these reports have been discredited by confidential sources within the presidency and the NPPCL.

The opposition against Bawa has a history dating back to the previous administration, with calls for his resignation due to allegations of politicization of the Commission, disobedience of court orders, and human rights violations. Anti-corruption civil society organizations and constitutional lawyers have been vocal in their criticisms, emphasizing the need for accountability and the rule of law.

While some quarters believe that Bawa is a victim of corruption fighting back, the call for his removal remains strong among those advocating for transparency and proper governance.

It remains to be seen how these suspensions and investigations will unfold, and their impact on the government’s administrative structure and ongoing reforms.
